Health Tip for Dogs and Cats

As the season transitions to fall, it’s essential to adjust your pet’s care routine to keep them healthy and happy. Cooler temperatures bring a welcome change for many pets, but they also present unique challenges. Here’s what you should focus on to ensure your dog or cat enjoys a safe and healthy autumn.

For Dogs:
With the drop in temperatures, your dog may become more active during walks. This increased energy is great, but be mindful of joint health, especially for older dogs or breeds prone to arthritis. Adding a joint supplement to their diet can support mobility and prevent discomfort. Additionally, ensure your dog is adequately groomed. As their summer coat sheds, brushing them regularly will prevent matting and allow their winter coat to grow in properly. Watch out for ticks, which remain active in many areas even as the weather cools. A quick tick check after outdoor activities is crucial to prevent Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.

For Cats:
Cats may spend more time indoors as the weather cools, so it’s a good time to refresh their indoor environment. Make sure they have warm, cozy spots to curl up in, as well as opportunities for exercise to keep them from gaining excess weight. Interactive toys or puzzle feeders can keep them mentally and physically stimulated. If your cat has outdoor access, keep an eye on their behavior; they may seek shelter more often as temperatures drop, so ensure they have a warm, dry place to retreat to. Also, continue flea prevention, as fleas can thrive indoors during cooler months, causing discomfort and potential health issues.

For Both Dogs and Cats:
As the days get shorter and nights grow longer, it’s important to adjust your pet’s feeding schedule and lighting environment. Both dogs and cats can be sensitive to changes in daylight, which might affect their mood and energy levels. Ensure they receive consistent feeding times and consider adding a little extra light in their living spaces during the evening to keep their environment cheerful and engaging. This small change can help maintain their routine and keep them feeling secure and content during the darker months.

This added care will contribute to your pet’s overall well-being, ensuring they stay healthy, happy, and full of energy as they transition into the cooler season.
